Cannabinoids Explained: THC, CBD, CBG & What They Feel Like

THC, CBD, CBG, and CDN are some of the most known cannabinoids, but did you know there are 113 compounds that make up the cannabis plant?

Cannabinoids are what control how your high feels.

This guide will make reading product labels at dispensaries gets way easier so you know what you’re buying.

What Are Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are the part of the cannabis plant that influences how it makes you feel.

If you’ve ever wondered why one product hits you hard and another feels light, that’s from the compounds in the plant.

They’re the ingredients that shape the whole experience.

That mix of cannabinoids in a strain is what decides if it feels strong, balanced, or relaxing.

There are actually over 100 different cannabinoids found in cannabis, but you’ll usually only see a handful that really matter on product labels.

Those are the ones we’re gonna break down next.

Most Common Cannabinoids Explained (THC, CBD, CBG & More)

The One That Gets You High – THC (Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol)

THC is what gives you that high feeling.

It’s the cannabinoid that changes how your body and mind feel.

The One That Keeps You Grounded – CBD (Cannabidiol)

CBD doesn’t get you mentally high like THC. It keeps you more calm and relaxed.

It’s commonly used for things like anxiety, stress, and insomnia.

There’s even an FDA-approved CBD-based medication used for certain types of seizures.

But in everyday use, many people reach for CBD-dominant products when they want the calming effects from cannabis without the head high.

The Clear-Headed One – CBG (Cannabigerol)

CBG doesn’t get you high like THC, but it doesn’t feel exactly like CBD either.

It sits right in the middle.

CBG is often called the “mother cannabinoid” because it’s what THC and CBD start from as the plant grows.

Most people describe the feeling you get from CBG-influenced products as clear, focused, and a little energizing.

Compared to THC, it won’t give you that strong head change or body buzz.

CBD leans more calm and relaxed. while CBG gives you a more alert feeling.

The Sleepy  One – CBN (Cannabinol)

CBN is what THC turns into as cannabis ages over time. It’s mildly psychoactive, but way lighter than THC.

It’s commonly known to just be the result of old weed which is why it can make you feel tired.

Usually when you see a product that has CBN in it, it’s intended to help you sleep.

CBN and CBG are opposites in how they make you feel. CBN will likely leave you sleepy while CBG will have you more alert.

The Effect Enhancer – CBC (Cannabichromene)

CBC is known to enhance the effects of THC and CBD.

It works in the background to make your experience smoother.

THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin)

THCV feels different from regular THC. At lower amounts, most people say it feels them feel alert and a less heavy than when they use THC.

You’ll usually find THCV in smaller amounts, but when it’s noticeable, it can change how a product makes you feel.

Other Cannabinoids You Might See

CBGA (Cannabigerolic Acid)

This is the raw form of CBG – the starting point before it turns into other cannabinoids.

You won’t really feel it, but it’s part of how everything else gets made.

THCA (Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid)

This is THC before it gets heated.

No high until you smoke or vape it, then it turns into THC.

CBDA (Cannabidiolic Acid)

Same idea as THCA, but for CBD.

Raw form, no high, mostly found in unheated products.

THCVA (Tetrahydrocannabivarinic Acid

The raw version of THCV.

Again, doesn’t really do much until it’s heated and converted.

TAC (Total Active Cannabinoids)

Not a cannabinoid itself.

This just means the total amount of cannabinoids in the product. Basically everything added together.

How to Use This to Pick the Right Product

Once you understand cannabinoids, you start choosing products based on how you want to feel.

Start with this simple approach:

If you want to feel high → look for THC

That’s your main driver. More THC usually = stronger effects.

If you want something balanced → look for THC + CBD

CBD can smooth things out and make it feel less intense.

If you want to stay alert → look for CBG or THCV

These lean lighter, more focused, not too heavy.

If you want to relax or sleep → look for CBN

That’s your wind-down cannabinoid.

Look at the mix of cannabinoids. Two products can both say “80% THC” and feel  different depending on what else is in there.
