In an effort to foster informed decision-making among young New Yorkers, the New York State Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) has launched a statewide initiative titled the “Listen & Learn” series. This program aims to engage youth and the trusted adults in their lives–such as parents, mentors, educators, and caregivers-to shape the future of cannabis education in NYS.
The “Listen & Learn” series is a series of private, in-person listening sessions scheduled across New York State from May-August 2025.
hese sessions are hosted in accessible locations by community-based youth-serving organizations. The primary goal is to create a space where young people and their communities can speak openly, ask questions, and provide feedback on cannabis education. This approach ensures that the information provided is relevant and resonates with the target audienceFelicia A.B. Reid, Acting Executive Director of the OCM, emphasized the importance of engagement in education
“Education rooted in engagement is not only meaningful—it’s more effective.
She further highlighted that while it’s known that cannabis use can be detrimental to youth development, young people often lack access to responsible education or information about cannabis. The “Listen & Learn” series aims to bridge this gap by identifying informational opportunities, resources, and local support needs through community feedback.
As the legal cannabis market continues to grow, the OCM recognizes the urgent need for youth-centered messaging that helps young people navigate the realities of cannabis in their communities. By directly involving youth and their trusted adults in the conversation, the OCM ensures that the educational materials and resources developed are grounded in the real concerns and questions of the community
The insights gathered from these listening sessions will play a crucial role in shaping future cannabis education initiatives in New York State. By prioritizing community input, the OCM aims to develop thoughtful, evidence-based substance use resources that youth and communities need.
